Lasik Refractive Surgery

The Excimer Laser is one of the greatest inventions in ophthalmology. The Excimer Laser is the device that physically corrects your glass prescription during surgery.

LASIK is a type of Laser eye surgery for correcting various kinds of refractive errors or eye powers like Myopia (minus power), Hypermetropia (plus power) or Astigmatism (cylindrical power).

To treat farsightedness/ myopia, the cornea is made steeper by removing tissue outside of the central zone of the cornea. This shifts the point of focus from beyond the retina to directly on the retina.

To treat nearsightedness/ hypermetropia, tissue is removed from the central zone of the cornea. This shifts the point of focus from in front of the retina to directly on the retina.

Often nearsightedness or farsightedness is accompanied by astigmatism, which can be treated simultaneously by making the cornea more spherical.

Many people choose LASIK instead of wearing Glasses or Contact lenses.

The refractive surgery department also does PRK, Epilasik, RLE and phakic IOLs for cases which are not suitable for LASIK. These are the different types of Refractive Surgery.
